Deep Purple

I'm addicted to AOL Radio. It's free. It's commercial free. And it's genre specific.

It also lets me program 5 stations like a real radio. So I've programmed the All Pearl Jam station (PJ 24/7!!!!), classic rock, 90s alternative rock, 1-Hit Wonders and 70s.

I'm really digging (pun intended) the 70s channel. It makes me feel happy and safe. I know that's funny to say, but it's true. It really takes me back to when I was a wee lad.

Most of the songs are typical songs -- hits from Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, etc. But sometimes they throw in a zinger, like Playground in My Mind. We used to sing that song all the time when we were kids.

The 00s are very much like the 70s in some aspects. We have a crooked president. We have an unpopular war. We just need disco, bell bottoms, Tab and psychedelia to make a comeback and it'll be just like living in the past.

Oh, that reminds me. I saw a commercial for Weebles. They're making a comeback.

I LOVED our Weebles. We had the haunted house and the tree house.

HAPPY TUNESDAY!!!

One of the songs the 70s station played that I hadn't heard in a long time was Deep Purple by Donny & Marie. I can't believe there is a video of it on YouTube. When I wasn't being blinded by Marie's DAZZLING earrings, I noticed that Donny looks a lot like Steve May. How funny!

When I was a kid, I would get so aggrivated because my uncle would come over and turn the radio to that station. And everyone that was 10+ years older than me loved it.
Now, I look back fondly of those times. I sorta wish we could just have a Saturday or Sunday BBQ by the pool, or Friday night beers on lawn furniture listening to music from the 50s-80s. Nothing too big or complicated that requires an evite or mass emails, just people over shooting the breeze listening to old music.
Thinking about it thats how I grew up.

  • SJ: I hear ya on the weekend BBQ thing. It'd be nice to have a laid back kind of lifestyle again. Perhaps when we retire we'll have more free time????

  • I loved the weebles haunted house! I saw one on ebay and had to keep from getting it, cause it would never get used, and where would you put it, and what if someone found me playing with my glow in the dark ghost weeble.

Well, guys... sounds like someone should bring a portable grill to a Saturday practice! and WiFi for the AOL radio...

  • Ben: When searching for a picture I came across a site that had the Haunted House. I REALLY wanted to buy it. I loved the ghost weeble. We would turn out the light to see it glow. OOH! Magic!

  • You should try http://www.1club.fm. Very similar, but better than AOL.

  • Weebles, BAH! Once you see they really don't fall down you're bored with them.

Give me Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots any day!

  • Damien: In response to your question, "Where can you get those outfits?" Just look in your closet. :-P

Shawn: Thanks! Will try it out this week.

Jay-mon: Rock Em Sock Em Robots sucked. They always broke.

  • I remember being a little kid and jumping up and down on my bed while the Donnie & Marie show was on with my little step sister.

    Thanks for the flashbacks :)

  • After reading your post I rememered that last night I dreamt I was trying to get this random old man to talk to us about Twelfth Night at our radio remote, and he couldn't talk until he had finished his can of Tab. I know why I am dreaming about work, but why am I dreaming about Tab?!?!?

  • I remember the 70's. People actually still hung out in their yards. To me the 70's just didn't want to quit being the 60's. Then came the Brady Bunch, and the world changed.
When I started college in 73' (yeah, I know), they had Just quit curfewing girls in the dorms at night.
And Steve May is way cuter than Donnie O.
    Definitely.

  • Jim: I have fond memories of my sisters PUSHING me off the bed while watching D&M.

Gary: Your profile pic rocks. And I tried Pandora. It's pretty cool!

    Jen: I agree with SJ

Daniel: Hopefully we'll go back to hanging out in backyards and having BBQs with the neighbors. It'd be nice if we did. :-)

Ben: LOL. I know. But half the time the damn robots didn't move the way they were supposed to. And I refuse to believe it was operator error.

Waterlily: LOL. Yes. They were YOUR Weebles. You made that clear every single day.
